Sydney FC gave its supporters a proper night out at Allianz Stadium, coming from behind to beat Brisbane Roar 3–1 and win the 2023 Australia Cup.

The final did not start perfectly for the Sky Blues. Brisbane's Thomas Waddingham opened the scoring in the first half, putting Sydney under pressure in front of its home crowd.

But the second half belonged to Sydney. Fabio Gomes scored twice, including a penalty and a late goal, while Robert Mak also found the net to complete the comeback. Joe Lolley was named winner of the Mark Viduka Medal as player of the match.

For Sydney FC, the result brought the Australia Cup back to Allianz Stadium and gave the club another piece of silverware in front of its supporters.

Cup finals are often remembered less for the neat tactical details and more for the feeling. This one had the right ingredients: a home venue, an early scare, a comeback and a striker making himself very popular very quickly.

Gomes' second-half performance gave Sydney fans a clear hero. In football, there are few faster ways to introduce yourself than scoring twice in a final. The win also gave the club momentum and a reminder of its ability to perform on big nights.

For Brisbane, the result was a painful one after starting strongly. For Sydney, it became the kind of night supporters will happily replay.

"A home final with drama, noise and a finish that made Allianz feel like Sydney FC's stage again."
